Tooth Extractions

Dentists prefer to preserve your natural teeth as much as possible, but sometimes that just is not an option. There are two ways a tooth can be removed, depending on how severe the damage is:

• Simple extraction: Local anesthesia is used to numb the extraction site. Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible to the naked eye and only require an elevator and forceps to remove.
• Surgical extraction: Performed under general anesthesia when the tooth cannot be easily accessed — either because it has not fully erupted or has broken under the gum line. A small incision in the gum is made to gain access, and gum tissue or surrounding bone may be adjusted to allow removal.

Why You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

• Tooth decay: The most common reason. Without regular checkups, decay progresses through the enamel, into the inner tooth, and eventually causes a root canal infection. If the tooth cannot be saved, extraction followed by a bridge or implant is recommended.
• Gum disease: Advanced gum disease attacks the tissue, ligaments, and bone supporting the teeth. As these structures deteriorate, teeth become loose until they require extraction.
• Overcrowded teeth: As part of an orthodontic treatment plan, extraction may be necessary to create space for remaining teeth to be aligned properly.
• Impacted teeth: Occurs when a tooth has not fully erupted beyond the gum line. Wisdom teeth are often impacted because the jaw is not large enough to accommodate them.
• Broken teeth: A tooth that breaks at or near the gum line may be nearly impossible to restore and may require extraction.
• Baby teeth: Sometimes baby teeth come in at an abnormal position, preventing the permanent tooth underneath from erupting normally.
